Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System :: Day 4

May 22, 2009 · Posted in General

First a confession.

I slipped up.

Last night, I did not wash my face. Not with Neutrogena or anything else. I fell asleep exhausted trying to put the bambino to bed.

Confession over.

This morning, unfortunately, chin zit appears to have blossomed into two, count ‘em, TWO chin zits. In almost the same location. I doubt that’s just because I didn’t wash my face last night, but it could be. Even sources with a great deal of authority on the subject can’t say for sure how long it takes for a pimple to form. Best estimates are anywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks!

At any rate, not only is the first one not going away, but now there’s a new one added to it. So I have to say that given the performance with this chin honker, as a spot treatment for existing pimples the Neutrogena acne control lotion (the benzoyl peroxide product in the set) isn’t really doing it for me.

On the upside, the cleanser and/or lotion is definitely doing some work on the blackheads.

Let’s go back to the claims Neutrogena makes on the packaging for a second.

1. works faster than Proactiv
2. starts clearing breakouts in just 2 days
3. works below the skin’s surface to help prevent new acne

I can’t speak to #1; haven’t tried Proactiv.

Regarding #2, well, that depends on your definition of “breakout.” Is it working on my blackheads? Yes. Whiteheads? Not so much. Pustules? (That’s the technical term for the big honking zit on my chin, by the way. If you want more information about the various types of acne, you can visit our acne information section) No, definitely not. It’s day 4 and the thing is as big if not bigger than on day one, and it’s sprouted a twin to boot.

Next week’s product is going to be the ThermaClear acne treatment device, which claims to start clearing pimples like the one I have on my chin in as little as 24 hours. I’ve used the device before, and in the interests of full disclosure, I used to work as a consultant to the company that makes it. But I want to take a closer look at heat treatment, light treatment and other devices, and I figure I should kick it off with one I already own! Because these gadget treatments are spendy, my friends. Very spendy indeed. And, in case we haven’t mentioned it before, we buy all our own products for testing, so we’re not beholden to the manufacturers to write a good review. Believe it or not, a lot of bloggers and nearly all the magazines actually get their products for free. That’s part of the reason why nearly everything that’s said about a product in a magazine is good — in case ya haven’t noticed.

Off the soapbox and off to the store. Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone!
